Exclusive Excerpt:

Setup: Senator Shep Conover has just asked Congresswoman Grace Colton to consider being his vice presidential running mate in the 2016 presidential election. But before he’ll choose her, she must be vetted and coached by his political consultant, Jared Rankin—the stranger she thought was a one-night stand.

I hold the wingback chair for support and paste a smile on my face as I watch the senator leave the suite. That leaves me and Jared and a hell of a lot of silence.

He picks up several thick manila files from a side table, perhaps the same ones I saw in his hotel room last night, and sits in the chair opposite me. His expression is unreadable.

I remain standing. Fight or flight. That’s what I’m deciding as I lament there’s nothing in view that I could bludgeon Jared with.

“Ms. Colton. Please, have a seat.” He gestures to the chair I’m supposed to occupy.

“No.” I sound like a petulant child.

“Grace—”

“No! What the hell was that, Jared? What the fucking hell?” I bend to get in his face to really shout him into submission, but he grabs my wrist.

I struggle but can’t break from his grasp. His deep brown eyes are smoldering with intensity, and I shoot as much hatred as I can from my eyes.

I’m embarrassed. Mortified. This man who has seen me naked, who made me scream his name less than twelve hours ago, is now Ms. Colton-ing me like I’m his kid’s schoolteacher.

That sends a shockwave to my gut. I know nothing about this man: not whether he’s married, or has a kid, or exactly what his business is here.

Sensing that the fight’s left me, Jared drops my wrist and slowly stands.

I hold my ground, standing toe to toe with him. His hair is combed neatly, but I remember the way my grasping fingers teased it into wild waves last night. His stubbled jaw remains.

I fold my arms across my chest because my gray pantsuit and silk top aren’t doing the trick. My heels don’t boost me to an even height with Jared.

His thumb brushes my lower lip and I gasp and take a step back.

“Pouting doesn’t suit you. Tuck that lip back in.”

“Don’t touch. I bite,” I snarl, angry that he’s mixed the familiarity from last night with the utter seriousness of this political opportunity.

“So do I,” Jared says, taking another step toward me and forcing me to step back. “But you like it.”

I bump into a wall covered in fancy wallpaper. Jared’s body cages me in.

“You’re a bastard.” I’m even angrier he’s getting to me. I grab his shirt, ready to push him back, but he captures my wrists and slams them against the wall above my head.

“I hear that a lot.” Jared’s body molds against me. I feel his erection hardening as he presses his hips into mine, and my traitorous body responds in turn, too eager to tip my hips at just the right angle.

I can’t get the word bastard through my lips again when every cell in my body is screaming Encore! Encore!

“How could you?” I hiss.

“It’s what you wanted. No stories. No strings.”

“But I’ve got a hell of a lot of regret.” I move to turn away from him, but Jared lowers his mouth toward mine. His lips land on my jaw and skim down my neck, his tongue explores the hollow of my throat then glides back up my neck to taste the soft skin behind my earlobe. I whimper and twist, but he just anchors me harder, both body and wrists.

“You knew,” I hiss, trying to get my brain to focus on why I’m here, not the hardening length in his pants that has me rubbing against him like a freaking cat in heat. “You knew who I was and you let me … you let me humiliate myself.”

I stifle a cry as his teeth come out, sinking into the flesh at the base of my neck. It stings, and the twinge heightens my need to retaliate, to touch him in all the ways he’s touching me. To drive us to release.

His knee presses between mine and my legs part, my body in full meltdown.

“You didn’t humiliate yourself. You just let go. Got out of your head for One. Fucking. Minute.” With each word his hips rock against mine until my core is aching to be filled again.

My God, is he really going to make me come? With every stitch of clothing on? I struggle against his hold on me. “You knew who I am. You knew we could be working together!”

“I didn’t go to the club expecting to pick you up, if that’s what you’re wondering.” His lips are inches from mine and his eyes narrow. The force in his expression nearly my undoing.

“Bullshit. You were all about picking me up.”

“And do you regret it?” Jared’s voice drops to a low, dangerous whisper.

No! “Yes.”

He drops my hands. Spins and strides to the opposite side of the room.

I go cold. And fucking frustrated. He wound up my body so tight that I’m vibrating with tension, needing just a little more to take me over the edge.

He gathers the folders and slides them inside a leather attaché case as if we’ve been sipping coffee for the last five minutes rather than slammed up against a wall. “Let’s go.”

“Where?”

“Your place.”

I almost snap, imagining the relief he could offer to my wound-up state. But his face says all business. He looks at his watch. “We’ve got a long list on our agenda today. Your place is good enough to start.”

About The Phoenix Candidate:

the-phoenix-candidate-mediumFans of Scandal, House of Cards, and The Good Wife will love Grace Colton…

Congresswoman Grace Colton is the most famous woman in politics—and the loneliest—until a drawling, sexy stranger offers her one night, no strings and no regrets.

But first, Grace must be vetted and coached by Shep’s political consultant, Jared Rankin, who already knows too many intimate details about her. He’s Mr. One-Night Stand.

Grace is torn: Play nice with Jared to join the senator’s ticket, or play hardball and back the slick frontrunner? Grace must decide where her loyalties lie and if she can trust Jared with her future—and her heart.

Synopsis: The man she should want, or the man she craves…

This time, all bets are off…

Penelope Carson loves to steal clients from Will Reaver. Yet something in her business nemesis’s icy blue eyes makes Penelope…nervous. It certainly doesn’t help that the man is the living embodiment of a Norse god. A controlled, powerful Norse god. Which she really should have remembered before she made a bet with him—because losing means becoming Will’s personal submissive for a week.

There’s nothing Will would like more than to have Penelope kneeling before him in complicit submission, her fiery dark eyes inviting him in. Challenging him. But their bet takes Will and Penelope deeper than either of them have ever been. Where control is an illusion, and boundaries are pushed aside. And where hearts become the stakes in a game that neither Dominant nor submissive can win…

See where it all began with Tessa Bailey’s Owned by Fate and Exposed by Fate, plus Katee’s first installment, Mistaken by Fate.

Excerpt 4 from BETTING ON FATE by Katee Robert

All Penelope wanted to do was to curl back up in Will’s lap and close her eyes for a bit. Her body felt strangely disconnected, and her head was fuzzy as if she’d just downed a bottle of wine. She’d known pain could turn to sharp pleasure between one breath and the next, but experiencing it for herself was something else entirely. Experiencing it in the capable hands of Will…

She shook her head and tried to focus. He wanted her to leave. He’d just said as much. She struggled to her feet, wobbling a little and wondering how she’d managed to keep her heels on this entire time, and reached down to pick up her bra. He watched her as she wrestled it on and then slid into her dress, his blue eyes unreadable. Had he worn that same non-expression the entire time he was beating her and then going down on her?

I don’t think so. Not when his voice had dropped and roughened when he talked to her, and he’d shown those little glimpses of heat. No, he was affected, whether he wanted to be or not.

It struck her that maybe he wanted to hustle her out of there because he had a secondary sub set up. The night was young and he was no doubt still wanting to scratch his itch. He certainly hadn’t gotten off with her. Hurt rose, and dampened the strange fog around her. There was nothing in their contract about being exclusive, so of course he’d be seeking pleasure elsewhere tonight.

She shrugged into her coat, her muscles protesting the movement. All she wanted was to curl up and sleep—to do something to maintain the feel-good sensation currently leaving her body. She paused at the doorway, waiting for… She wasn’t sure. For him to tell her to stay? For him to rush over and take her against the wall? Penelope shivered at the thought, then forced her spine straight. She’d promised herself that she wouldn’t beg Will for a damn thing, and she wasn’t about to break. Not now, not ever.

So she opened the door, part of her still expecting him to call her back, and walked out. Nothing. She caught a few curious looks from people as she made her way around the perimeter of the room and to the elevator. The doors closed without interruption, and only then did she allow herself to sag against the wall. “This is so incredibly bad.”

Special Announcement from author Nazarea Andrews

Today we are revealing a special announcement from author Nazarea Andrews. Check out the author’s note, excerpt, and teaser below for details!

SHADES OF BLUE announcement 2

NOTE FROM NAZAREA ANDREWS:

This year, I’m doing something super fun—I’m releasing an entire novel in serial format, with a new installment coming every week. And the only way to read it is to sign up for my newsletter!!! I know, I know! Newsletter—all the spam. But I promise. No spam. Aside from the weekly story updates, I’ll probably send one newsletter a month announcing new releases or upcoming events. And that’s it.

So here’s a bit about this sexy new thriller.

Shades of Blue

Caledon Peterson came to Northern University for one thing: to find his missing brother. But the college is a hive of secrets, and he’s quickly drowning in them.

Indigo Kennish is a junior, an activist and an enigma, someone he can’t quite figure out with electric blue hair, a bad attitude, and lips he can’t quit thinking about. Violet Rice is the picture perfect sorority girl, daughter of the dean and blatant about wanting him. But neither girl is telling him the whole truth.

And someone is killing students at the university.

As the body count grows, and the truth about his brother comes to light Caledon is drawn closer to both girls, and the secrets threaten to bury them all.

Go back to Northern in a new novel that tells the curse of Bluebeard in a modern dark thriller where you never know who to trust.

Shades Teaer 3

EXCERPT FROM SHADES OF BLUE:

I hate Northern. I hated it when I visited it the first time, when I told Dad to fuck himself and his alma mater. I hated it every time I came back, for one of my brother’s graduation.

I hate it now, more than ever. Because this time I’m here to find the brother who vanished on its fucking campus. I sit on the stone stoop, and stare at the students bustling around campus like it holds the secrets to their entire world.

Hell, maybe it does. For me, it holds the secrets of my brother, and that’s enough.
Freshman orientation is in an hour, and I stretch my legs. It wouldn’t do to be late, not at my first official function.

A few girls sashay by, and I can feel their eyes, hot and assessing.

It’s not terribly surprising. I’m a Peterson, after all. We are born lucky, blessed with wealthy and intelligence, and damn good genetics. I flash them a quick smirk, and one, the one in the middle, blushes, a deep bloom of color that trails down her neck. I laugh soundlessly as the ringleader pulls away her minions, gossiping as fast as they go.

Lane has been missing for six months. Since March. And the cops say nothing happened—he answers his emails, and he says he’s in Europe for a while, getting a fresh look on shit after a bad breakup.

But I know my brother. And Lane isn’t in fucking Europe. He hated Europe—we always ditched mom and dad, ending up in some shitty hotel in Amsterdam, blitzed out of our minds. Dad hated that I subverted Lane. The older guys never fell for my shit. But Lane—we were separated by three years, but he was the best friend I could ask for.

I shake my head, and glance down at the email again. It’s from last October, talking about a girl he had just started seeing, a girl who would break his heart. They’re saying he ran from her.

Promo – DIRTY ANGELS by Karina Halle

From the USA Today Bestselling author of Love, in English and The Artists Trilogy, comes a dark romance about a good girl and a very, very bad man. It’s a deliciously twisted take on forbidden love, set among the drug cartels of hot, steamy Mexico and is not for the faint of heart. It contains explicit sex, violence, abuse, drug use, bad language and sexy Mexicans. You have been warned…
For Luisa Chavez, a twenty-three year old former beauty queen, a better life has always been just out of her reach. Sure, she’s had men at her feet since she was a young teenager but she’s never had the one thing she’s craved – security. Having grown up in near poverty, her waitressing job in Cabo San Lucas can barely let her take care of herself, let alone her ailing parents. Every day is another unwanted advance, every day is a struggle to survive.
When Salvador Reyes, the depraved leader of a major Mexican cartel, takes an interest in her, Luisa is presented with an opportunity she can’t afford to pass up. She’ll become Salvador’s wife and exchange her freedom and body for a life of riches – riches she can bestow upon her deserving parents. But Luisa quickly finds out that even the finest wines and jewels can’t undo the ugliness in her marriage, nor the never-ending violence that threatens her every move.
Soon, Luisa is looking for an escape, a way out of the carefully controlled life she’s leading. She finally gets her wish in the worst way possible.  As it is, being the wife of Salvador makes her an ideal
target for rival cartels and there’s one particular man who needs Luisa as part of his cartel’s expansion. One particular man whose quest for power has destroyed lives, slit throats and gotten him out of an American prison. One particular man who will stop at nothing until he gets what he wants.
That man is Javier Bernal. And he wants Luisa. He wants to take her, keep her, ruin her.  Unless she ruins him first.  Some men were born to create empires, some women were meant to be queen.
**Dirty Angels is the first standalone novel in the Dirty Angels Trilogy, in which all books feature or involve different characters. The character of Javier Bernal is from The Artists Trilogy, and while reading TAT is recommended if you want additional insight into this twisted character, it is not required.**
EXCERPT:
He shut the door behind him and cocked his head at me. Even in the low light I could feel his eyes, feel him studying me.  “I heard you weren’t too interested in eating today. Este says you told him to go fuck himself. I wish I could have seen that.”
When I didn’t say anything, he took a step toward me and held out his hand. “Get up,” he said, waiting. His posture stiffened and his voice lowered. “I said get up. I don’t like to repeat myself.”
It was only then that I noticed he was holding something in his other hand. Two things, it looked like. A folded-up rope and a knife. I waited for the pang of fear to hit me. It was subtle and I didn’t let it show. I also didn’t obey him.
He quickly reached down and grabbed me by the arm, yanking me up to him until I was pressed against his chest, crushing the front of his suit jacket.
“You’re a light little thing, aren’t you?” he asked in a bemused voice, his breath smelling faintly of cinnamon and tobacco. “Delicate and easy to break.”
We’d see about that.
I acted instinctually. With my free hand I jabbed my palm into his nose. He yelped in surprise, maybe even in pain, and momentarily let go of me. That’s all I needed.
I pushed past him and went for the door. I put my hands on the knob and turned, pulling it toward me. There was a wonderful feeling of freedom for just that one moment where the door opened and the light from the hallway spilled in. The feeling of power that came from fighting back.
Nothing in my life had felt as good as my hand connecting with his face.
But the feeling was fleeting. All at once the door slammed shut and Javier was behind me, the rope going around my chest.  He hauled me backward into him so that he was holding me tight from behind.
“Don’t you know it turns me on when you fight back?” he whispered in my ear, his voice ragged. “Though it turns me on when you don’t fight back, too. I guess you can’t win.” He sniffed. “I think you bloodied my nose.”
“Then I guess you’ll have to bloody my face,” I taunted him, my veins on fire with the strange adrenaline that was running through me.
He sucked in his breath. “No, my darling. I would never do that to your face. Just your back. I have a lot of respect for beautiful things, you know. They are usually the most dangerous.”
Oh, how I wished I could be dangerous to him, to anyone.
“You know, Luisa,” he said, holding me tighter now. I could feel his erection pressing into my ass. “We’re going to be doing this dance with each other until we give you back to your husband. You could make things easier on yourself. I don’t like to play rough with you.”
“No,” I said quietly. “You just want to cut me up.”
“I’m merely branding you,” he said. “Don’t make it sound so ugly.” He lifted his arm so that the knife was shining in front of my face. I could almost see my warped reflection staring back at me.  “My penmanship with a knife is very delicate. A hard-earned skill. If your husband’s name was Javier, I think you would be quite pleased with the finished result.”
The man was completely crazy. He planned to carve his name in my back, as if he was doing me a favor.
“Come on,” he said, and quickly wrapped the rope around me so my arms were held tight to my sides. He made a few knots and then shuffled me over to the bed before he pushed me onto it, face down. I turned my head to breathe and he pressed down on the side of it, to keep me in place. “Now stay.”
He straddled me, legs on either side of my waist, and his hands stroked softly along the back of my neck until he grabbed my collar. “My shirt looks good on you,” he commented. “But it looks better off.” He reached underneath me, grabbing me by my collarbone, and ripped the shirt open before pushing it to the side and sliding most of it off until one shoulder was bare.
“He’s not going to want me when he sees what you’ve done,” I managed to say.
“He’s not going to see what I’ve done until I have what I want. What your marriage can and cannot handle is not my problem and none of my business.”
“You’re disgusting.”
“I’m many things but disgusting isn’t one of them.”
“You’re sick.”
“Well, there’s no argument there. Good or bad, there is great power in knowing who you are and owning it. So, tell me, my beauty queen … who are you?”
He leaned down so those blazing eyes of his were visible to mine.
“No one you will ever know,” I told him, relieved at how strong I sounded.
“We shall see about that.”

EXCERPT
Mile after mile took us closer to reality. Closer to the time when I would have to drop her off and go back home. Alone. And why the hell did that bother me? I’ve never had a problem being alone. Being alone meant I didn’t have to share my past. Being alone meant I didn’t have to see the pain and
disappointment in her eyes when she found out I was nothing but a broken man with a selfish heart that could never love her the way she deserved to be loved.
But now, it’s like everything had changed. The last several hours had been… amazing. I would never use the word on the regular, but it was the only way to describe it. Despite the reasons we spent the day together, it was incredible. Realization slammed into the thick wall surrounding my heart.
Cora meant something to me.
That was a scary fucking thing.
“Cannon, look out!” The moment the words shredded her throat, I saw the small white ball of fur and jerked the wheel in the opposite direction. My heart froze in my chest, forgetting that it needed to beat in order for me to regain control of the truck. Aiming for the median, I slammed on the brakes, and as
soon as the tires met dirt, we skidded to a breath robbing stop.
“Fuck!” Fear and adrenaline pumped mercilessly through my veins. Leaning over, I assessed Cora. Thank God, she had her seatbelt on. “You ok?” I pushed her hair from her face.
Nodding, she sucked back a deep breath. “I’m fine. Are you ok?”
“I’m good. What the fuck, Cora? You can’t scream like that while I’m rolling eighty miles an hour down the damn interstate!” I shouted.
Cora flinched and I immediately wished I had bit my tongue. She looked downright distraught. “The puppy.”
She unfastened her seatbelt and barreled out of the truck just as an 18 wheeler flew by. “Goddamn it, Cora. What the hell are you doing?”
“We can’t just leave it out here. The poor baby will get hit.”
“Get in the truck now before you get hit.” I ordered as she walked onto the shoulder of the highway.
“Not until we find him.”
Fuck me.
Fuck me. Fuck her. Fuck the damn dog that nearly killed us.
Another 18 wheeler flew by, whipping golden locks of hair all around her face. She stumbled two steps backward. “Get your ass in the truck and I’ll find the damn dog.”
Spinning in place, I spotted the little shit cowering near the guard rail. The damn thing couldn’t be no more than a few months old. “Shhh…it’s ok.” I soothed as I gathered the frightened little mutt in my arms. Quickly checking, I discovered she was female.
Figures.
All white with a patch of dark grey on her chest. “It’s ok, girl.” She shivered in my arms.
“Oh my God,” Cora said, stroking the dirt streaked coat.
“I thought I told you to get in the truck,”
Completely ignoring me, she gently took the puppy from my arms. “I can’t believe someone left you out here all alone. Poor thing. I’ll take care of you sweet baby. It’ll be ok.” Cora cooed and my heart did some kind of flip flop bullshit in my chest. I found it difficult to breathe. Impossible to think. What the hell was she doing to me?
Back on the road, ten miles from home, she finally put it all into perspective. “My mom won’t let me keep her, Cannon. She never let us have pets growing up.” Cora’s voice was so sad and barely came in a whisper. “Can Hope stay with you until I figure out something else?”
“Hope? You already named her?”
“Yeah, she has a heart shaped patch on her chest. She’s definitely a sign of hope.”
“She could have killed us.”
“But what if she saves us?”
Six words, one by one branded themselves on my heart, bringing it back to life. One word stood out among the rest.
If.
If only she were right.
One can only hope.

Cover Reveal – FORBIDDEN NIGHTS by Lauren Blakely

It’s here! The cover for Lauren Blakely’s next title in her Seductive Nights Series, FORBIDDEN NIGHTS, is here and it’s a beauty! We are thrilled to get to share it with you today. But first, we want to share just a little bit about Lauren Blakely and a taste of FORBIDDEN NIGHTS with you.

Lauren Blakely is well known for writing sexy, heartfelt and humorous contemporary romance as well as deeply emotional new adult stories — one commonality in all her books is the scorching hot sexy times. And this book is absolutely no different! Nate Harper and Casey Sullivan have some thrilling moments together.

And… we have a surprise for you!

FORBIDDEN NIGHTS will release on February 17th!

That’s a full month earlier than originally planned! So you will get to experience Nate and Casey and all of their sexy and heartfelt moments together even sooner! Still dying to get your hands on this smoking couple? Here’s a little taste for you from Lauren Blakely:

“Just relax and let me lead,” he said, whispering in her ear, a waft of her citrus scent drifting by his nostrils. She shivered briefly against him, and that nearly did him in. He stayed strong, swaying gently, guiding her in slow, sensuous moves. “I’ll show you how to let go, but you have to trust me. And that’s where it starts. I can show you how good it will feel when you give up control.”

She breathed in sharply, like she was acclimating to new air on a distant planet. “Why do men like a woman to give up a control? What is it about the lack of control that men like so much?”

“It’s not that they like a lack of control. They want a woman who wants to give herself to him. He wants a woman to melt into his arms, to get aroused from a kiss on the back of her neck,” he said, and traced a fingertip gently under her hair, watching her reaction as she drew in a breath. “It’s the hand on her arm,” he said, now trailing his fingers down her bare skin to her elbow as he leaned in to whisper. “Or warm breath near her ear.” She gasped, and he kept going. “He wants a woman who’s so turned on, she’ll nearly beg for it. He wants her abandon. He wants to be the only one to make her feel that way.”

She parted her lips to speak, but he shushed her with his fingertip against her lips. God, he was so tempted to let her suck on his finger right now, to watch her simulate a blow job, to let her show him what she could do. But that would come later. He needed to kiss her first.

That is, after he teased her…

Are you as excited as we are about this book?!

And now, here’s the fabulous cover for FORBIDDEN NIGHTS!

ABOUT FORBIDDEN NIGHTS:

A smoldering and sensual standalone romance novel in the New York Times and USA Today Bestselling Seductive Nights Series by Lauren Blakely…

Sinfully sexy hotel CEO Nate Harper knows exactly how to please a woman. He’s equally skilled in keeping his heart safe from the kind of hurt his ex inflicted on him years ago. But one thing he’s not so good at what-so-ever is getting his mind and all his dirty thoughts off the gorgeous, outgoing, and absolutely captivating Casey Sullivan, the new head of the Joy Delivered company.

They’ve been friends for years now, and Casey trusts Nate completely. So it makes perfect sense to her to ask him for hands-on guidance when she finds herself in need of some of his romantic expertise.

The trouble is, his heart may be signing up for more than it bargained for when he agrees to help her learn to abandon her need for control in the bedroom. Because as she experiences what it means to let go, he’ll start to experience what it means to feel again…

But what happens when all those forbidden nights turn into a deeper connection that’s much more than either bargained for?

*FORBIDDEN NIGHTS is a standalone full-length novel in the bestselling SEDUCTIVE NIGHTS series following the love affair of Nate and Casey. You can read it on its own, but you would likely enjoy the other books too.*

*This is a crossover novella featuring characters from both
the Seaside and Ruin series*

Lead singer of AD2 Demetri Daniels only wants one thing…

To marry the love of his life and make the day perfect for
her.

But perfect isn’t exactly happening, not with his
sister-in-law going into labor, or with rabid fans discovering their wedding
location, or birds suddenly attacking the rehearsal dinner.

It doesn’t help matters that his bride to be is starstruck as
singer Ashton Hyde makes a drop in appearance to start recording his new album.

Nothing is going right.
And it’s about to get worse.

ADD TO GOODREADS

EXCERPT:

Something flashed by my window.
Awesome, the night before I’m going to get married a freaking bird was going to break into my room and kill me.
Well, I’d had a good run with her.
Something else flew by.
Holy shit, why were seagulls out this late?
Didn’t they have a curfew? Like all spawns of Satan?
I wasn’t making it up. Something else flew by and then landed on the windowsill.
Slowly, as to not scare it into attacking me, I turned on my side.
A bat.
A freaking bat.
Great. Another animal to add to my hate list.
“Shoo!” I waved my hand at it.
It stayed put.
Seaside had bats. Who knew? Or maybe this one had flown all the way up from South America just to haunt me. No really. If it could happen, it would happen to me.
“Yo,” I called. “You need to go.”
The bat stayed.
I needed a gun.
Or a giant-ass Tonka trunk to throw at it.
“Seriously…” I held my hands in front of my face. “…this is the moneymaker, all I got. Well, that and the voice. You ruin this, you disappoint women everywhere.”
The bat was unfazed. Maybe it was friendly? Like Dracula from Sesame Street?
I reached forward.
It lurched back just far enough for me to pull the window shut.
“Sucker!” I pointed at it and stuck my tongue out just as it took a dive toward the window.
Cursing, I fell backward on my ass.
My door jerked open. “Hey, you okay in here? I could have sworn I heard yelling… and why… are you on the floor?” Jaymeson cocked his head to the side.
“Why are you at my house?”
Jaymeson shrugged. “I live next door in that giant-ass beach house during filming, remember?”
“Which still doesn’t explain why you’re in my bedroom.”
“I watch you while you sleep then eat chocolate over your quiet body and take Polaroids to stash under my pillow. Why else would I be here? We’re out of popcorn.”
“Oh good, because that first explanation sounded way too detailed to be a lie.” I pushed up to my feet. “Now go home.”
“The girls are hanging out… watching movies. By the way, why are you in bed so early? It’s ten.”
“Easy. I’m so sexually frustrated and keyed-up. I figured a Nyquil-induced state would be the only thing to keep me from breaking down Lyss’s door across the hall.”
“It’s open.”
“Not helping.”
“No, seriously. She said she trusts you so much she’s leaving it open all night long…” Jaymeson did a little jig in front of me. “…all night long. All night.”
“Go be British elsewhere.”
“Aw, mate.”
“Not your mate.”
“Cheers.”
“Stop that!”
“Blimey.”
“Okay, now you’re just being annoying and saying words that people don’t even use in real life anymore.”
“Not true.” Jaymeson thrust his hand into the air. “One time—“
“Go home, Jaymeson.”
“I have an idea, though.” He shrugged. “Let’s have a bro night while the girls watch movies.”
“I’m sexually frustrated, and you want to sit next to me?”
“The man has a point.” He huffed. “Well then, good luck with…” He pointed at my body. “…that. And if all else fails, cold showers, friend.”
I cursed.
“Want me to sing you a lullaby with my accent? Does it for Pris every time. Then again, it’s not hard to—“
“Go.”
Chuckling, he lifted his hands into the air and backed up. “Fine. See you on the other side.”
The door slammed.
And I was left more wide awake than I was before.
I was just getting ready to jump back into bed when my door slammed open and Alyssa launched her tiny body in my direction like a lion attacking a zebra.
Her mouth was on mine.
Her tongue, touching my tongue.
Her breasts pressed against my naked chest.
I groaned.
And sadly, pushed her away.
“Whatcha doin?”
“Saying goodnight?”
“Say it again… I dare you,” I whispered against her lips.
“You ate three fish meant for seals today.”
I kissed her again. “I also sang One Direction. Give me my prize, woman.”
“Prizes come tomorrow night.”
“Can they come tonight too?” I joked.
She smacked me on the shoulder. “Goodnight, Dem!”
“Goodnight, love of my life, sexiest woman on the planet. Oh, and PS, Jaymeson offered to sing me a lullaby. He was going to fix the problem, and here you go…” I pointed down in exasperation. “…and stir things up again.”
She tilted her head, a seductive smile curving around those lush lips. “Mad because I’m good with my hands?”
“How good?” I croaked, not so sure I wanted to hear the answer, considering I was ready to explode on the spot.
Her voice dripped with sex. “Wanna see?”
I nodded, mouth dry. Hell yes.
With a saucy grin, she waved them in front of her face and winked.
“Cute. It’s like sign language for the lion to come out and play. Do it again. See if I don’t chase you down the hall and claim any prize I can get my hands on. Go ahead. Run antelope, run!”
“Ha.” She threw her head back and laughed. “I’ll see you in the morning… Just think. This is the last night you have to sleep all by your lonesome.”
“There was a bat!” I said in desperation.
Lyss’s eyes narrowed as she peeked under the covers. “In your bed?”
“No!” I coughed, swatting her hand away. “At the window. It taunted me, said… mean things.”
“The bat talked to you.”
“No, well…” I scratched my head. “…tt communicated with its eyes.” Yeah, that so wasn’t helping my case.
“And it said… ‘I’m going to kill you in your sleep’?”
Awesome. I could have really done without the cheesy Count Dracula voice.
“No, but—“
She crossed her arms. “Dem, was there really a bat?”
“YES!” I went over to the window. “It was right here.”
She squinted and walked over. “Wow, look at that bat-filled sky. It’s just… insane.”
“I’m not lying.”
“Cute excuse, a bat. Didn’t see that one coming.” She laughed. “Love you.”
The door closed.
With a curse, I glanced back at the window, only to see the bat sitting there again, freaking glaring at me like some demon-possessed creature. Swear, it’s eyes were even red.
“I’ll get you,” I vowed.
Really, that should have been my cue right there. Seeing a bat was like seeing a black cat, right? Because the next day… though I was convinced was going to go as planned…
Didn’t.
It just…
Didn’t.
