abouthebook

Love on remote Perry Island was one thing, but with the flash of a camera everything has changed.

Movie star Evan Carlson has just landed the role of a lifetime, playing the infamous Dexter Red. Fans can’t get enough of the sexiest, most-talked-about guy to ever hit paperback pages.

Haven is in Austin working on her songwriting career, and Evan’s faith and commitment are put to the test. No matter which way he turns, Hollywood keeps getting in the way.

Does realizing their career dreams mean losing their relationship? Can they survive the headlines and media frenzy surrounding Evan’s new role?

When it comes to love, some lines are meant to be blurred.

debbiesreview

Red Lines was a wonderful follow up to Finding Haven.  The next chapter for Evan and Haven has them dealing with life away from Perry Island.  As Evan and Haven deal with following career dreams, we are right there with them wanting to see the twists and turns in their relationship.

It was great to see the growth in Evan and Haven’s relationship.  I really liked that Evan was a constant throughout Haven’s insecurity.  T.A. Foster again delivers characters that I want to know and keeps me turning the pages.

There was a time when Nick loved the fear he instilled in his enemies. His tattoos alone promised danger, but it was the look in his eyes that delivered on it. A contract killer since he was just a boy, Nick has now forged a new life and a new identity with the woman who followed him, captured him, and changed him.

He terrified Daisy. Once. But she couldn’t resist, and she ignored every warning. It paid off. Now she’s part of a new beginning, a fresh start in America helping him to leave behind a reckless and violent past as a professional killer. But the past is never easy to outrun, especially when so much of it thrives on revenge.

A new threat has emerged from the shadows, and now Nick and Daisy have no choice but to rely on Nick’s killer skills to protect them from everything they’ve tried so hard to escape.

I absolutely loved that we get to revisit Nick and Daisy with Last Hit: Reloaded.  In this lastest, we see that Nick and Daisy are making their life together but are still experiencing some struggles.

Both Nick and Daisy are enrolled at the university and taking classes.  While Nick is happy to keep his social circle of one, Daisy longs to make friends.

We are introduced to a couple of new characters when danger plays out.  Clare and Frederick do a stellar job teasing us with McFadden’s character…I wan’t to know more.

I’m looking forward to the next installment in the Hitmen series…bring on Last Kiss.

THE GROWN UPS

 The Grown Ups

A Novel

By: Robin Antalek

Releasing January 27th, 2015

William Morrow

 abouthebook

From Robin Antalek, author of The Summer We Fell Apart, comes an evocative and emotionally resonant coming-of-age novel involving three friends who explore what it means to be happy, what it means to grow up, and the difficulties in doing both together. Spanning over a decade, and told in alternating voices, The Grown Ups explores the indelible bonds between friends and family and the challenges that threaten to divide them. It is the addictive and moving story of these old friends who wind up confronting their past in order to find happiness in their adult lives that make this novel an anticipated winter release.

Sam Turner, the summer he turns 15, feels lucky enough to enjoy the unexpected attention of his friend Suzie Epstein, even though it’s only a few secret months. For reasons Sam doesn’t entirely understand—and will never question—the budding relationship is kept hidden from their close circle of friends. But before their summer tans can even start to fade, Sam’s world unexpectedly shatters twice: Suzie’s parents are moving away to save their marriage, and his own mother has suddenly left the house, leaving Sam’s father alone to raise two sons.

Watching as her parents’ marital troubles escalate, Suzie Epstein takes on the responsibility of raising her two younger brothers while simultaneously planning an early escape to college to seek independence. Though she occasionally thinks of Sam, it’s her oldest friend Bella Spade she finds herself missing. Embarrassed by the destructive wake of her parents as they left the only place Suzie could call home, Suzie makes no attempt to reconnect with the one person she needs. Its years later that a chance meeting with Sam’s older brother Michael will reunite her with both Sam and Bella—finally forcing her to confront her friends, her past and what she left behind.

After losing Suzie, Bella surprisingly finds her first real love in Sam. But his inability to commit to her or even his own future eventually drives them apart. Watching Suzie and Michael as they seem to have worked it all out, Bella’s only to wonder where she went wrong and how to make it right.

excerpt

Mrs. Spade died in the winter of their junior year of college and they all returned home for the funeral.

Bella had called from Vassar to tell Sam. He’d picked up the phone and heard his name and then nothing, just a rush of air across the wires followed by what sounded like a far away howling.  Bella and Sam had continued, despite distance and any real commitment, to find their way back to each other.  She surprised him first at school, showing up at his door, and they had fallen back onto his twin mattress as if they were starving.   It felt exotic, somehow, to be in a place where no one knew them as a couple. To hold hands as they shared crummy food off Sam’s meal ticket at the dining hall, to drink dollar pitchers at The Rat, to wake up next to each other and have sex without talking, like they had the map of what they liked inked indelibly in their brains.  By the time Sam’s roommate returned from his girlfriend’s place, the weekend ended, the buzz would wear off, and Sam would think they wouldn’t do it again.  Until one of them showed up on the doorstep of the other’s room and it started up all over again.  Sam thought this thing with Bella was casual, comfortable. They had never labeled what they were or talked about where it was going. He thought that was what they both wanted. Or maybe they were just too scared to bring it up.  Sam liked things the way they were until something like this happened, and he had no idea how to act or what they meant to each other.

debbiesreview

Robin Antalek has given me a new favorite with The Grown Ups. I was initially intrigued with a story that was going to span the teen years to adulthood of Sam, Suzie and Bella. I can honestly say that the portrayal of all the real life issues and struggles had me experiencing a gamut of emotions. The reader gets a story full of characters that we see grow as they deal with relatable struggles and challenges that will keep the pages turning. I’ll be on the lookout for future books by Robin Antalek.

excerpt

That kid that could be mine.

I get up and let the empty bottle drop to the floor. The woods are eerily quiet, as if it can sense my anger. As if it knows the bitterness that lingers in my veins, as if it knows the burn of not knowing anything.

Like the woods, I’m left in the dark. Completely.

Branches and twigs crunch under my feet as I increase my pace to a gentle jog. And again, to a slow run. Then to a sprint.

The need to know increases with every footstep, as evenly paced as the ticking of the clock. It doesn’t matter that I’ve probably drunk too much beer to be here or that we’ve only been back for a matter of days.

I can’t be in this shithole full of memories without knowing. I can’t move on until I know. I can’t forgive her for a single fucking thing until I know—and even then, maybe I won’t be able to.

Maybe she’s unforgivable.

Instead of knocking on the back door like I did yesterday, I round the side of the house to the front door. The front room light glows softly through the curtains, but the rest of the house is dark.

My chest heaves with the exertion of my run here and I grab the doorframe to balance myself. I’m definitely too fucking drunk for this conversation, but what the hell.

I bang on the door, once, twice, again and again and again. “Sofie! Open the fuckin’ door!”

“Shut up!” she hisses, yanking it open. “The hell’re you doing here?”

I smirk, leaning against the wall. “Shouldn’t I be askin’ you that, princess?”

“Are you drunk?” Her voice rises a little at the end, and her eyes widen.

Those eyes. Fuck, those baby blues that have always undone me.

“Drunk? No. If I was drunk I’d be sitting at home like a miserable bastard and not here facing the cause of my misery.”

“You’re being an asshole. I don’t have to listen to this.”

She pushes on the door, but I wedge my foot in front of it. I let go of the wall and grab the edge of the door.

“Actually, you do.”

She can’t overpower me, and she knows it, because she lets up and the door swings open. “Why are you here, Conner?”

“You have a kid.”

She smacks her lips together. “Yep.”

“When? When did you have her?”

Sofie takes a deep breath in and presses her hands to her stomach. They’re shaking, even as she links her fingers to hide it. I can see that fucking tremble.

She whispers something but I’m too pre-occupied by her hands to hear it.

“What?”

“August last year,” she repeats, still a whisper.

August. Last year. My stomach clenches as I meet her eyes. “When? When in fuckin’ August, Sofie?”

“August fifteenth.” Her voice hitches halfway through the ‘fifteenth.’

Almost seven months to the day she walked out on me and the rest of Shelton Bay.

Adrenaline hums through my body, and I stare at her. At the tears building in her eyes, the quiver of her lips, the bob of her throat as she swallows harshly.

It’s no different from the burn in my chest, the twisting of my stomach.

“Is she mine?”

She shudders and a tear drips from her eye.

“Sofie. Is. She. Mine?!”

An Amazing Journey with A VERY GREY CHRISTMAS by T.A. Foster

abouthebook

I was getting ready to spend the single most important holiday of the year alone. Completely and utterly alone.

That meant he wouldn’t be there Christmas Eve. No making Christmas cookies, or listening to my dad sing off-key while my mom bustled around wrapping last-minute gifts. No decorating the tree. No midnight Christmas kiss.

No waking up in Grey’s arms. We were actually going to spend our very first Christmas in different states.

That was until Grey gave me the most unexpected gift of my life.

T.A. Foster delivers a wonderfully sweet holiday tale.  For anyone that has read Kissing Eden and Loving Eden, A Very Grey Christmas is not to be missed.  The reader will want to be sure to spend part of their holiday season with Eden and Grey for their first Christmas holiday.

Great Getaway with A FIGHTER’S DESIRE by L.P. Dover

bb022-fighters2bdesire_partone_high

abouthebook

Two is always better than one.

What would you do if you were given the chance to spend the night with not one, but two fighters? Would you do it? Could you open yourself up to the pleasures they offered and do exactly what they said in order to pass on to the next round?

It was common knowledge that Ryley and Camden Jameson, well-known MMA fighters and identical twins, were just as aggressive and passionate in the bed as they were in the ring. The only problem was that if you didn’t pass their test on the first night, then you didn’t proceed to the next round. They loved a good fight, and that’s what they got when they met Ashleigh Warren.

Ashleigh knew what was going to happen when the twins approached her with a proposition, and needless to say, she knew exactly how to handle them … or so she thought.  The rules had changed, and in order to get them both she had to first spend one night with each and last until they were done with her. It was a proposition she couldn’t refuse, but she knew it wouldn’t be easy to win. However, it was one that she was going to enjoy.

excerpt

“You don’t even know me,” I challenged. “Why do you want me to be your date? You saw me for one second when you were up in the ring. I could be the biggest bitch in the world for all you know.”

“That could be true. If you want the honest truth,” he said, gazing down my body, “I saw you in that red dress and all I could think about was how hot it would be to fuck you in it.”

Holding in my gasp, I tightened my legs together to keep my clit from throbbing out of control. It pissed me off that my body responded to him, but it could also be because he was so close; brushing his heated body against mine, and smelling so
amazingly delicious. The wild side of me wanted to tell him to take me right then and there, but the logical side wanted to slap the shit out of him.

“Do you honestly get women by saying stuff like that?” I asked dryly, without a hint of a smile.

His grin grew wider. “Most of the time. So what do you say? Do you want to be my date for the night … the whole night?”

Yes, my mind screamed at me.

“No,” I snapped, making his smug smile disappear. “I’m not one of your little groupies, Ryley, and I sure as hell am not going to beg for your attention like what you’re used to. You need to find someone else. I’m not interested.”

You just lied again, I scolded myself.

Turning on my heel, I headed for the door and opened it, only to be stopped by a hand grasping my arm and the door shutting quickly in front of me. “Don’t you see? I don’t want anyone else. I saw you and you are what I want.”

Laughing, I turned around and yanked my arm out of his hold. “Tell that to someone who’ll believe you, Ryley. I don’t fall that easily, especially for someone who hasn’t had to work for a woman. You’ll have to do much better than that.”

Or else I’m not going to play the game.

abouthebook

When you’re told to stay away from someone or something it only drives the urge to go after it more. In this case, that was exactly what happened. For years, Gabriella Reynolds—younger sister of MMA’s Heavyweight Champion, Matt Reynolds—was warned

by him to stay away from his fighter friends; she deserved better and they would only break her heart.
Did she listen? Yes, for a while, but temptation can only consume you so much until you fall into its trap. There’s a certain fighter she’s interested in, and it just so happens that he’s her brother’s best friend, the only one that is completely off limits to her. However, she’s not the only one fighting temptation. Tyler Rushing can’t deny his attraction to her, but he’s afraid she’ll want more and he can’t give that to her. When he finds out that’s not the case … everything changes.
Secrets can be dangerous, but they can also be thrilling and intense. Gabriella and Tyler have no choice but to keep their time together a secret … and it’s a secret that’ll stay with them forever.

Breathing hard, I stepped out of Tyler’s reach and started for the door, much to his dismay. “Why are you here, Gabriella?”

Keeping my back to him, I paused with my hand on the knob, and blew out a heavy sigh. “I told you. When I want something, I get it. I wanted to see you.”

“You’re walking a dangerous line, Gabriella. I don’t do relationships, and I don’t plan on starting … even if it is with you.”

I glanced at him over my shoulder.  “Well, then I guess it’s a good thing I don’t want one with you either. Look, Tyler, I’m only here for the weekend. If you want to see me again you know how to find me. No strings, just you and me.”

OMG!  I am loving the fighters of L.P. Dover’s Gloves Off series.  I really enjoyed the introductions we get of Dover’s MMA fight world in A FIGHTER’S DESIRE parts 1 and 2.  Both novellas leave me wanting to know more about EVERYONE.

Part 1 does a great job hooking the reader into the series.  How can you go wrong meeting Ryley and Camden?  It would be a mistake to just take the twins at face value…there’s much more going on beneath the surface.  The reader only catches a glimpse but enough that the wondering will have you ready for the next book.

Part 2 gives a closer look at the friendships in the Gloves Off series.  I enjoyed learning more about Gabriella and Tyler.  And the steamy scenes were a bonus.  The story that started in Part 1 continues in Part 2 and will only have the reader waiting for the next book.

I’m totally hooked on Dover’s fighters and can’t wait to read more.  Bring them on!

excerpt

Being with him like this was so erotic. We were exposed in the woods. It was private, but not really. I pulled Chance’s shirt over his head, while hearing a car go by on the road we’d came in on.

We felt the raindrops hitting us, but did nothing until they became heavier. We should have stopped, but the more the rain hit Chance’s body, the more I wanted him. His chest was so slick when my palms glided over it. I leaned forward, lapping up the drops of water off of his skin. The sounds of our bodies slapping together echoed off the trees, along with our matched bout of moans. I reached up, taking a handful of his wet hair and pulled his lips into mine. Our slippery mouths played together, each kiss intensifying with our steady pace. Chance pushed me back, allowing my body to lie flat on the car. He ran his hand over my slick breast, circling my nipple with the wetness from the downpour. Thunder rumbled in the distance, sending chills all over me. This wasn’t just crazy, it was dangerous, making it the hottest sex I’d ever experienced.

I savored Chance’s lips again, sucking the water off of them, and then licking them dry. He teased me with his tongue, pulling away when I leaned in, and with no warning he picked up his rhythm. Chance pumped into me so hard that I cried out each time our skin smacked together. My toes curled as I felt myself losing control of my muscles. As I clung to him overwhelmed with passion, he tightened up, closing his eyes, drawing his ending out. He held me tight against him, and let the rain continue to fall down on us.

We were two people, naked, in the middle of the woods, too caught up in each other to care about anything else.

I found A Hope and a Chance an enjoyable read.  With a Hope and a Chance, Jennifer Foor delivers characters that are likable and memorable.  Hope and Chance both have pasts that have shaped where they are at in their lives.  It was refreshing to read a character like Hope, young but made strong from her experiences and still with a soft naive side.  The attraction and chemistry between Hope and Chance will keep the reader turning the pages and reading until the very last word.  A Hope and a Chance kept me turning the pages, I didn’t want to put the book down until I reached the end.

With their best friends in a relationship, Hazel and Javier end up in the same places.  There’s an attraction that can’t be denied but a relationship is the last thing either of them want.  I really liked how the relationship evolves.

I would have loved to have been able to read from Javi’s POV.  The reader isn’t shafted with a less than character without his POV but more Javi would have been great.  Javi was sweeter than I expected but I thought this was a great balance to Hazel’s tougher than expected edge.  They made for a cute match.

Fouling Out

By Tiffany King

From the upcoming New Adult anthology

The warmth inside the building was soothing after walking from the car outside. I felt mildly disappointed when Dalton dropped his arm from my shoulders, until he reached for my hand. As we strolled along, I became hyperaware of how something as innocent as handholding could become somewhat erotic while sipping wine together. Dalton slid his thumb across the top of my hand in slow methodical strokes before gently caressing my pulse point. The hairs on the back of my neck felt as if they were standing on end. Each sweep of his thumb was a sensual dance with my sensitive skin, making it tingle.

It was becoming apparent to me that it might have been a bad call on my part to skip lunch. Between the scent of Dalton’s cologne and the alcohol I was consuming, I was already feeling slightly intoxicated. I nibbled on a few cubes of cheese to attempt to alleviate the buzzing in my head. Dalton’s breath teased my neck, making me shiver in a good way. I should have put some distance between us so I could regain my bearings, but instead I snuggled closer to him, wishing we were somewhere else with a lot fewer people around.

All the air escaped my lungs as Dalton slowly captured a bead of wine from my bottom lip with his finger. I watched with bated breath as he moved the finger to his own mouth, sucking the drop of wine. It was all I could do not to moan as my insides turned to putty.

“You need to stop looking at me like that,” Dalton murmured in my ear.

“Like what?” I licked the rest of the wine off my lip with the tip of my tongue.

This time it was Dalton who groaned softly. Placing his hands on my hips, he slowly backed me into a dim corner, away from prying eyes. “Like you’re thinking how great it would feel if I hoisted you up on that wine barrel table over there with your legs wrapped around my waist.”

“Are you sure that’s not you thinking that?” My hips responded almost instinctively as he pulled me snugly against his body. I could feel him, rock hard, pressed to my stomach. The wanting desire I had been keeping at bay from the moment he showed up at my house looking practically delectable with low-riding jeans and a black V-neck sweater that accentuated his well-toned chest was threatening to explode.

I was super excited to see the authors in this anthology.  I couldn’t wait to see how the stories would connect.  I was not at all disappointed.  I loved the housemate connection and that we do see the characters in each story.

Each of the stories delivers on believable characters living real college lives.  My favorites were A.L. Jackson’s BEHIND HER EYES and Tiffany King’s FOULING OUT.   In BEHIND HER EYES, I couldn’t help but feel for Misha and want to see her trust Darryn.  I’m a sucker for a second chance or reunion story and that’s what we get with FOULING OUT.  I loved every bit of Courtney and Dalton’s story.  The childhood best friends that grew apart and are reunited in college for a chance at something more.  Tiffany King gives readers a strong character that isn’t willing to settle and knows her value in Courtney.  I loved that the star basketball player had to put work in to get the girl in this story.

WHEN WE MET is not to be missed for a reader looking for memorable characters by some awesome New Adult authors.
