Why couldn’t it have been my motherfucking heart? Why did it have to be my baby girls? I had been asking this question since the day they told me and Emmy that there was an issue with Harlow’s heart. Rush had tried to talk to me and calm me down before Grant got back out here from seeing the baby that could have very likely just killed my baby. He said Grant was a wreck. That he had been standing there like a man possessed watching the door for a sign of Harlow. For any word.

He was scared. Good. Motherfucking GOOD! He should be. Maybe death was too good for him. A life empty and void because the woman who owns you is gone is hell on earth. That was what he deserved. I’d lived it and I knew what it was like. Death would be too easy for him.

I glanced back at Dean who was sitting with Blaire talking, then found where the rest of the band had found places to sit. When I’d gotten the call they had all shown up at the airport with me. They loved my girl too. She was their family. There was a good chance they’d kill Grant.

“Kiro,” Grant said and I jerked my head back around to see the man responsible for this. He was wearing a pair of blue scrubs which meant he’d probably been back to see that baby that took my Harlow from me. The dark circles under his eyes and the pale color of his face didn’t make me feel any better.

“You killed my, baby,” I snarled unable to not take out my pain on someone.

Grant tensed and Rush was there in between us immediately. He looked fierce and ready to take me on.

“She’s alive. She’s fighting because that is what she does. I don’t give a damn who you are I will have your ass removed from this hospital if you can’t keep it together. I’m sorry you’re hurting. I know you’ve got to be scared as shit. But so is he,” Rush said pointing at Grant. “He’s fucking terrified. Losing her would destroy him. He’s already breaking apart. So don’t come in here throwing shit around and accusing him of anything. He stood by the woman he loves when she was determined to have this baby. He couldn’t force her to do something she’d never get over.”

Dean came up beside his son and put a hand on Rush’s shoulder as if to make sure I knew I wasn’t going to be able to attack Rush either.

“The boy looks like he’s been through hell. Harlow wouldn’t want this. She would want you to be here for each other. You know that, Kiro.” Dean said in a stern tone.

They were all on the boy’s side. He could have stopped this. My baby wanted to give him a baby. She loved that baby because it was his. So hell yes I blamed him. He should have used a mother fucking condom.

“He didn’t protect her. He could have saved us all this with something as simple as a damn condom.”

Grant closed his eyes and I saw him tremble. Apparently he knew that too. He was taking the blame. Good. He needed to know if we lost her he killed her. Him. He didn’t take care of her. She trusted him and this was what happened.

“He didn’t know about her heart until the day she left him. She was pregnant before she left. She just didn’t know it,” Rush explained.

I already knew that. I didn’t care. He still should’ve used a condom. Respect a girl like Harlow and protect her from your dick. It’s fucking courtesy.

“Where the fuck is Mase? His ass should be here,” I said, angry that the brother she adored wasn’t here. Waiting.

“I’m right here asshole.”

“What is your deal, Jude?” she yelled, taking several strides toward me.

“My deal?”

“Yeah, you’re sweet and endearing one minute and then brushing me off the next. I don’t get it. What do you want from me? Am I a charity case? Do you get off on hanging out with the poor sick girl but then tire of me easily?”

Closing the last few inches between us, I got in her face. “You have no idea what you’re talking about,” I hissed.

“No,” she answered, “I really don’t. You don’t tell me anything. You are this big, giant mystery that I know nothing about. Why is that, Jude?”

“It’s too much,” I simply said.

“You mean, I can’t handle it,” she inferred.

“That’s not what I said, Lailah.”

“No, but that’s what you meant. You’re just like everyone else. I’m too fragile. I’m too weak. Let’s sugarcoat the truth, so it doesn’t upset Lailah. “Mia,” Cayd called after her, as she made a beeline for the ballroom’s exit doors.

Glancing over her shoulder at him, she pursed her lips together and pushed through the doors, heading straight for the elevator bay. She called out to hold the lift as the doors were about to close and was lucky that the occupants waited to let her in.

“Thank you,” she smiled, as she took her place near them, closely followed of course, by Cayd.

“Where are you going?” he demanded, as soon as the lift doors were closed.

Mia hadn’t bothered to punch a button, she was just willing to ride the lift tow her where ever it was going, in the hopes that Cayd would be left outside it. But now, she glanced at the levels.

“The bar of course.” She leaned forward and pressed the floor that stated ‘bar and restaurant’. “I have some ‘picking up’ to do.”

Choosing to ignore her childish insinuation, Cayd tried to keep his voice calm. “You’re headed in the wrong direction for the bar. This lift is going up,” he pointed out.

“I’ll get there eventually.”

When the elevator doors pinged open, the couple inside made a hasty retreat, glad for freedom away from what was about to turn into a lover’s quarrel.

Although, the moment the doors closed and the lift once again began to move, Cayd pressed the stop button.

“Tell me what you’re upset about.”

“Cayd. What are you doing? Start the bloody lift or they’ll call the fire brigade.”

“Tell me what she said to you.”

Mia folded her arms and leaned against the wall of the lift. “She said that you’d slept with her and every other girl out there, and that you got some girl pregnant and took off. But mostly, she just went on about how young I am, and how you’ll get bored with me and toss me aside once I’m over thirty.”

Cayd let out a sigh, and stepped toward her, sliding his hands up to either side of her face. “Mia, I’m not going to lie to you. I have been witha lot of those women out there. But not one of them even holds a candle to you. She’s just trying to upset you. You, my love, are the only one I see. The only one I want to be with. You’re the only one who can run and have me pursue. I don’t care what those women think. I care about you. I love you. Only you,” he whispered, gently kissing her forehead, her cheeks, her eyes and finally her mouth.

Mia let out a whimper as his tongue entered her mouth, sliding against her own as he possessed her with his adoration. Once a college English professor, I now write full time. I live in rural Indiana, where, when I’m not writing, I get to hang out with my husband and two kids–a six-year-old boy and a two-year-old hellion, er, girl. Not surprisingly, reading and writing remain my favorite activities, though both come in bits and pieces these days, not the big hunks of time I enjoyed before I had children. When I’m feeling virtuous, I like to go running (I use that word liberally. I’m really, really slow) or do yoga.
