Winter Donovan loves two things: her sister and her sister’s ex boyfriend. She’s spent her whole life doing the right thing except that one time, that night when Finn O’Malley looked hollowed out by his father’s death. Then she did something very wrong that felt terribly right.

Finn can’t stop thinking about Winter and the night and he’ll do anything to make her a permanent part of his life, even if it means separating Winter from the only family she has.

Their love was supposed to be unrequited but one grief stricken guy and one girl with too big of a heart results in disastrous consequences.

UNREQUITED TEASER NEW

excerpt

“Are you humming?” Bo asked.
I looked up from pulling on the dingiest carpet I’d seen in months. This house I’d picked up was vile, worse than usual. Bo had suggested it was a meth factory, given the needles, rotten egg smell, and burnt patches on the walls and flooring. It could have been, or it might just have been an ordinary addict’s house, but there was shit everywhere.
If I was humming, I didn’t realize it, but I was in a decent mood. I figured once I got Winter to just sit and talk with me, we’d work it out. That was something worth humming about.
I just shrugged and went back to work. “Just trying to block out the god-awful music you choose to play. You’ve been up north here for almost a year. Can’t you play anything but country songs?”
“I could.” Bo paused to toss a handful of staples in the trash. “But I know it annoys the hell out of you. And that makes the music sound that much sweeter.”
“Too bad you don’t know shit all about constructing a house and you still have to hang on my dick until you can get it right.”
“Which is why I play music you hate. It fits our dysfunctional relationship.”
“I thought you were going to therapy to fix your problems.”
“If by ‘therapy’ you mean having a ton of awesome sex with my girlfriend, then yes, I’m in therapy all night and random times during the day.” I snorted but wisely said nothing. “But speaking of therapy,” Bo continued. My response was a loud groan that I hoped would be hint enough that I didn’t want to talk about whatever it was that followed. Bo ignored me. “How’s your mom?”
“Well, she texted that she got up and had coffee today, so I count that as a win.” I reached down to tug harder on the carpet. Did they glue it down instead of just stapling the edges?
“Mal says ‘Paradise lies under the feet of your mother.'”
That made me stop. I gaped at Bo. He threw up his hands, one still holding a crowbar he was using to pull up the tacking strips, the long thin lumber pieces that held the carpet on the edges of the room.
“What the hell does that mean?”
“Apparently it means if you don’t make your momma happy, you ain’t gonna be happy.”
“If I knew what would make her happy, I’d do it,” I replied.
“I suck at this comforting thing.” He pulled off his hat and scratched his head. “But maybe you outta talk to someone else?”
“Like Lana?” I grunted. “No thanks. Between her and Mal, it sounds like I should be taking my mother on a date.”

I couldn’t wait to read Jen Frederick’s lastest Woodlands story.  Finn O’Malley caught my attention in the early books in the series and I wanted to get to know him a lot better.  I was rather excited to learn that Winter was of Chinese descent.  Being of Asian descent, I’m always interested in a romance that features diversity.

I love the guys of the Woodlands and the camaraderie between them is always a highlight to read.  But what has me picking up each new book is knowing Frederick will deliver on character development.  With Unrequited, Finn is struggling to fulfill his father’s dream project while grieving his death.  Winter has loved Finn since his time dating her sister, she battles between those feelings and her feelings of loyalty to her sister.  The character growth is reflected in the progression of the story and their relationship. As I was reading I couldn’t help but root for Finn and Winter and want to see that they would each make choices that had them happy.

I loved the mention of The Joy Luck Club.  My sister and I have referenced  it when we’ve talked about growing up with an Asian mother.  Out of the whole book, the only thing I can nitpick about is that I would have loved to have known earlier in the story more about Winter’s background.  I felt by the time we learn of her ancestry and her family background, it felt almost an afterthought when in actuality it could appear to validate some of her feelings with her family and sister.  And that is totally personal and not anything that takes away from the story.

I’m a Jen Frederick fan, I love that I can get lost in her stories. I’ll be looking to pick up her next book whatever story it might tell.

Meet Puck & Becca in SILVER BASTARD!

SILVER BASTARD

Blurb

First in the new Silver Valley series from the New York Times bestselling author of the Reapers Motorcycle Club Novels.

Fourteen months. For fourteen months, Puck Redhouse sat in a cell and kept his mouth shut, protecting the Silver Bastards MC from their enemies. Then he was free and it was time for his reward–full membership in the club, along with a party to celebrate. That’s when he saw Becca Jones for the first time and set everything in motion. Before the night ended he’d violated his parole and stolen her away from everything she knew.

Five years. It was five years ago that Puck destroyed Becca and saved her all in one night. She’s been terrified of him ever since, but she’s even more terrified of the monsters he still protects her from… But Becca refuses to let fear control her. She’s living her life and moving forward, until she gets a phone call from the past she can’t ignore. She has to go back, and there’s only one man she can trust to go with her–the ex-con biker who rescued her once before.

Puck will help her again, but this time it’ll be on his terms. No more lies, no more tears, and no more holding back what he really wants…

Excerpt

Ignoring him, I settled back on my stool and surveyed the room. We sat in Becca’s section, and what I saw wasn’t making me happy. I knew she was a good waitress, but she’d just started here and it showed. Not only had she fucked up several orders, she didn’t quite seem to get the rhythm of the bar. That wasn’t my problem, though.

My problem was that despite these fuckups, nobody seemed to mind. I had a nasty suspicion this was due to her perky tits, friendly smile, and tight little ass that seriously just needed a bite taken right out of it.

She really, really needed to get a new job—every man in the place wanted her. Including me. Especially me. I hated them. All of them. I shifted uncomfortably, because just like every time I shared a room with her, my pants had gotten tight.

Torture. Becca was just so fucking fine on every level, and not just her looks. There was something about the way she carried herself . . . I couldn’t put my finger on it. Like she was dancing through life to some song nobody else could hear. Never met another woman like her—she wasn’t just sexy, she was a survivor and I admired that.

She’d grown up so much since the first time I’d met her. Bigger boobs, a nice fullness to her ass that was nowhere close to fat but would be perfect to hold tight while I fucked her. Her lips had plumped, too, and over the years she’d gained a sparkle in her eyes that turned her from pretty to 100 percent spectacular.

Not to mention how she’d tasted.

Nearly blew in my pants when I’d taken that mouth. Just the memory got me hard. Make that harder. Fucking basket case.

When I’d pulled up to find her sitting outside with Collins, a thousand murder scenarios ran through my mind. And yeah, I know I covered that already, but if anything ever deserved empha- sis, this was it. Collins needed to die. I didn’t care how nice he was. After that I’d throw Becca on the back of my bike and make a run for the hills . . .

Okay, so there were a few problems with the plan, the top one being she hated me. Or she should—I’d certainly given her cause. Boonie nudged me.

“Did I mention you’re pathetic? You want her, take her. Other- wise let it go because you’re an embarrassment to all men in general and to the Silver Bastards in particular.”

excerpt

His eyes twinkled with humor in that damnable way they had. Although Bryce kept talking, his hands slowly roamed over her body, eliciting sensations she had no business enjoying. “Ye study plants, luv. Ye ken how rare the wild cherry tree is in the Highlands. I’d like Effie to enjoy its blossoms in May.” He kissed her beneath her ear and a shudder pirouetted through her body. “Would give me great pleasure to see her enjoy the chaste beauty of its dainty white blossoms.” He shifted to kiss beneath her other ear, his closely cropped beard causing more shivers to dance along her skin. “I’m thinking Hamish and I will plant a sea of bluebells and shy primroses around the trunk to charm the American.”

Much as she hated to admit it, the man’s weight on her and the flexing of his muscles fetched some verra sweet and sexy memories. Dinna be weak, Kenzie. Show him he means nothing to ye.

She slapped her palms against his sweaty chest to push him off. “If yer thinking of charming me with kisses and sweet talking, yer wasting yer breath. Now let me up. I need to check me bike. See if I can ride it the rest of the way.” Her fingers eased across the inked designs on his warm skin. When did he get these tattoos on his pecs? Dinna look at his chest. His face. Look at his face, Kenzie, for God’s sake!

His hands covered her breasts and one of his disarming sexy smiles spread, showcasing snowy white teeth, the front two overlapping halfway down, adding a boyish allure to an otherwise perfect face. Why did he have to be the one to make her yearn, the one she dreamed of in the night, and fanaticized over during the day? Why him?

“Get off me, ye worthless excuse for a man.” His erection poked her abdomen and angered her all the more. How dare he? “Are ye naked beneath yer kilt?”

His dimples winked when he flashed a sexy-as-hell smile. “Ye ken I am. Ye, above all, ken how I dress and undress, me bonnie blue-eyed and brown-eyed woman.” He bit her lower lip, sucked on it fer a few intense seconds, and sighed before he rolled over. “Get up, then. I’ll see ye get to the American’s house. Me truck is up ahead.”

Mad as a hornet, she stood and brushed leaves and grass off her clothes before she marched up the hill to her bike. “No thanks. I’d sooner ride with the devil hisself as to get in a vehicle with the likes of ye, Bryce Matheson.” Ye and that massive hard-on ye just had pressed to me.

“Kenzie Denune, the mere sight of ye still sets me heart to tripping. As soon as yer through mourning Duncan, I mean to woo ye.”

Nothing the clod might have said could have angered her more. When she’d handed him her heart fourteen months ago, he’d backed away, claiming his deep love for his deceased wife kept him from caring the way he should. He’d tried softening the blow by telling her she deserved more. As if she were a bampot who would fall fer such foolish nonsense. Now that she was in mourning herself, he was chomping at the bit fer her to forge ahead with her life. Well, she was moving on and her journey didna include him as a traveling partner.

“Dinna hold yer breath waiting. A man only gets one chance with me and ye threw yers away.”

“Surely a good-hearted woman such as ye can see when a man is sorry fer the terrible mistake he’s made and grant him another go.”

A Highlander’s Passion is the second in the Highlander’s Beloved series.  And my first read by Vonnie Davis but not my last.  I’m not sure what I expected with a Highlander shifter romance.  I thoroughly enjoyed A Highlander’s Passion.  This fun, sexy read kept me turning the pages needing to know more about the sexy shifter and his witch, wanting the triumph of good over evil and  what was going to have me laugh out loud next.  I’ll be picking up the first in the series to catch up and be looking forward to the next.

Blog Tour – INTERCEPTED by Emma Hart

Release Day April 13
INTERCEPTED EMMA HART ITUNES EBOOK COVER

Four people. Four goals. Four endings.

In the third and final book of the USA Today bestselling By His Game series, the rules of the game no one knew they’d have to play are blurring, and when the past becomes the opposing team, hearts aren’t the only thing at stake of being lost…

Finding naked pictures of her best friend on her boyfriend’s phone wasn’t in Everleigh White’s five year plan. Neither was moving back to Los Angeles, the city of dreams that never managed to make hers come true. There’s only so many years you can be in love with your best friend before you realize he’s never going to love you back, after all. If only her ex would stop showing up at the gym where she works, she’d be much happier.

Being a father at nineteen wasn’t how Reid North, the Vipers’ wide receiver, imagined his life going, but when his ex-girlfriend tricked him into parenthood, he accepted it. Eventually. Now, with his ex on the verge of being released from prison, he’s holding onto full custody of his seven year old son, Leo. Football and Leo have left Reid no time for dating… Until Everleigh comes back.

His best friend his whole life, Everleigh never knew Reid loved her. She left before he could tell her. Now she’s back in front of him, and he’s not letting go. Even if all he gets is her friendship again. But in a city like L.A., dreams come true when you’re least expecting it.

So do nightmares.

With their exes beating down their doors with demands and explanations, their hesitant and building relationship is threatened at every corner. They’re at serious risk of being intercepted by the past, and that’s a ball Reid is determined to catch.

Except desperation can lead to stupidity—and Reid soon realizes he can’t catch every ball, no matter how perfectly it’s thrown to him. This time a fumble could cost more than a few points.

It could cost him everything.

(INTERCEPTED is the third and final book in the By His Game series and can be read as a standalone, although it is advised to read BLINDSIDED and SIDELINED before, in this order.)

EXCERPT
I follow him down the sidewalk, feeling a little antsy. I mean, he looks like Reid. Okay, an older Reid, but still Reid. He sounds like Reid, he acts like Reid, but he… feels like someone else. He doesn’t feel like the guy who dragged me out from behind curtains at parties and forced me to the dance, or the guy who begged me to go to his high school and college football games because he insisted he always caught better when I was there.

He feels… rawer. Realer. Rougher.

And I’m terrified.

He was always the one person I struggled to say no to. It was his eyes, and his smile, and the fact that I was crazy fucking in love with him. I’m afraid that now, although four years have passed, that I won’t be able to say no, either

That much is obvious by the fact I’m standing outside a sandwich shop I’ve never seen in my life.

“Trust me,” Reid says, smiling as he pushes the door open.

I stare at him flatly. Still, I follow him in like a little puppy because I’m always game for a good sandwich.

“Two meatball subs,” Reid orders. “Both toasted with cheese, but one with extra cheese. No salad or sauces on either.” Order done, he looks back at me and winks.

God. He even remembers the sandwich.

“This isn’t good for my diet,” I mutter, following him along the counter to the register.

“Or mine.” He smirks, glancing at me and running his eyes over my body. “And for what it’s worth, you could probably have another cheat day without it making a difference.”

I hit his arm again. “Shut up. You can’t perve on me. It’s wrong.”

“That’s what you think.” He hands over twenty bucks and raise his eyebrow at me. Then, leaning in, he whispers, “My cock thinks different, Ever.”

I swallow. Well, shit. How am I supposed to respond to that?

I’m not. That’s right. I’m not.

I take my warm sandwich from the counter and grip it tightly, heading toward a table in the corner. I slide into the seat against the wall and unwrap my sandwich at a snail’s pace. Each crinkle of the paper surrounding it seems ten times louder than normal as I studiously ignore Reid’s bulky, muscular form sitting opposite me.

Dammit. I shouldn’t be attracted to him. I shouldn’t consider being attracted to him.

Sure, I was before. In the ‘you’re handsome, be my Prince Charming’ kinda way. Now, though? Now it’s a, ‘holy crap, rip off my clothes and ravish me on your backseat!’ kinda attracted.

I’m not saying either way is bad. I’m just saying that I would prefer for the first type of attracted.

I bite into the sandwich so I don’t have to talk to him. But, apparently, he doesn’t get the message.

“I didn’t know you worked at the gym.”

I swallow. “You say it like it’s the only gym in Los Angeles.”

“It’s just… the gym.” He smirks. He studies me for a second before the curve turns downward. “Why’d you leave, Ev?”

“You knew I was going.”

“Sure I did. I just didn’t know you were going Casper on my ass and fucking off without a word.”

My eyes fall and I focus on my sandwich. Carelessly, I pick at the top of the bread. “I had my reasons, okay? It was easier for me if the media didn’t follow me so intently. You know they thought I was going to star on Broadway instead of college.”

“God, you’re a damn shit liar, Everleigh White.”

“It’s the truth, Reid, okay? They were all up in Dad’s business because of the Hartman movie, and when those Broadway rumors started it was bullshit. I ran without anyone knowing so they wouldn’t follow me. It lasted a week, but I didn’t have them timing my pees on the plane so there we go.” I glance up. “Believe me, okay? I’m not lying.” Not entirely, anyway.

“Whenever you’ve told me you’re not lying, you’ve been lying.” The force of his gaze makes me look up. “I still fucking know you, Ever. You haven’t changed a single damn bit.”

“And you still can’t control your f-bomb,” I shoot back.

“Says the girl who drops it like she drops the word ‘hi’ at a high school reunion.”

“Kiss my ass.”

“You offerin’, firecracker?”

“You taking me up on it?”

“I could flip you over this table in a second and you know it.”

I narrow my eyes and grab my half-eaten sandwich. Standing, I reach toward the trashcan and slam the screwed-up package into it, leaving the lid to slam down as I turn on my heel and head for the door.

Reid says nothing. But he follows me. I hear his footsteps against the tiled floor of the sandwich place, and he grabs the door the second I let it go, stopping it from slamming.

My feet pound against the sidewalk. Jesus, I don’t remember him being this so fucking infuriating before. Was he this demanding? Or frustrating? Or goddamned annoying?

Hell to it all. Was he this fucking sexy?

No, siree. No, he was not.

And that’s the frickin’ problem.

Intercepted hit the mark on more than one of my checklist likes.  I love a good friends to lovers romance as much as a good reunion romance.  Add in sports and an athlete hero, and I’m sure I’m starting a read that will have me happy.  Intercepted might have been my favorite of the three books in the Game series.  Although I loved Jack, I think there was just something a little more about Reid that had me loving him right away.  Hmm, maybe it was the hot, single dad thing…Leo was a adorable.
Hart does a wonderful job with her character portrayal with Reid and Ever.  Two best friends are reunited and this time around their as yet unmentioned deeper feelings are acknowledged.  I love that things don’t just easily fall into place like nothing happened when Ever and Reid do run into each other.  They both have some unease on how things will be between them.  The story worked for me and felt real.
Overall the Games series was a winner for me.  I loved Jack!  And Reid became a favorite!  The match ups in all three stories worked and made for fun and steamy reading.  I admit that some of the smaller details kept this series from being perfection.  Hart weaves an engaging tale but there’s no question that she’s a Brit telling the story.  The American football terminology could have been proofed to read more true to an American football player or fan.  Not a super big deal but enough to have me reading those instances more than once.

From Emma Hart, the New York Times bestselling author of the Game series, comes a brand new series where the game is realer, the tension is tighter, the sex is hotter, and the stakes are the highest of all…

Two people. Two agendas. Two games.
What happens when the out-there It-Boy of football meets the
secret It-Girl of fashion?
As the daughter of Hollywood’s sweetheart, Leah Veronica can’t even buy a coffee without finding her face on a magazine stand, so it’s no wonder she’s launching her first fashion line in secret. With it debuting at
New York Fashion Week in just under a month, extra time in the spotlight is the last thing she needs.
The son of the best quarterback the league has ever seen, filling legendary shoes as the L.A. Vipers’ quarterback was inevitable for
Corey Jackson. So was meeting Leah Veronica—the first girl to hand him his ass without putting a hair out of place.
Getting the handsome, prickly blonde into his bed becomes his number one goal. But getting the sexy, over-confident footballer the hell
away from her becomes Leah’s—at least until she realizes the best way to do that is to give him what he wants.
If only it was that simple.
When Corey discovers who she is, and private photos of Hollywood’s finest find their way online, everything they thought they knew is thrown into disarray.
And when secrets are exposed and hearts are shattered, they have to figure out if they’ve been blindsided by love or reality, and if it’s worth running the extra yard to win the game they never meant to play.

Three people. Three motives. Three reasons.

When the game leaves the field in the second book in the USA Today bestselling BY HIS GAME series and mixes with sex, lies, and betrayal, the future isn’t the only thing on the line…
Macey Kelly has sworn off men. Unless they’re going to zip in and out of her apartment—and her vagina—quicker than they can give her an orgasm, she’s not interested. Finding out her boyfriend of three years got her cousin pregnant was a total confidence knock. Luckily for Macey, confidence is something she has in abundance, so all Mitch’s asshole move did was make her pretty cynical toward men.
The last thing Jack Carr needs at the start of the season is for a dark-haired, sexy as sin, gyspyesque beauty to be consuming his thoughts. Football is his life, which leaves no time for girls. Unless they’re the love ‘em and leave ‘em girls. Becoming one of the best running backs the league has ever seen by racking up the yards is his top priority… not bedding Macey Kelly, despite her affinity for blow jobs and total sexual abandon.
Avoiding each other is the perfect solution, but when your best friends are in a serious living together kind of relationship, that isn’t always an option. Sometimes, sex on tap is the easiest option. And the sweetest.
Until Mitch shows up with a bombshell that could shatter Macey’s perfectly carved out life. It’s been a year, but he isn’t giving her up, not now he has a chance at winning her back. And he knows her buttons. Every single one of them.
Unfortunately for him, Jack Carr isn’t a loser. The star running back has his eye on the Vince Lombardi—and on Macey. But seeing her hanging between them both isn’t something he’s down with, not when he discovers why she’s so against anything more-ish, as she puts it.Macey quickly realizes she’s the ball being passed between two desperate yet opposing teams, and that only one of them can score the touchdown. But will the winner be the guy she lived with and loved for three years, or will the winner be the guy who understands her and makes her body come alive?
In this game, someone will be sidelined, and calling the play isn’t always as easy as it seems.
(SIDELINED is a full-length, standalone novel. It’s not necessary to read BLINDSIDED before this book, but it is advised.)

Only for Us is the third installment of Cristin Harber’s Only series.  Grayson and Emma’s story picks right up where Only for Her left us.

I loved that I was feeling so much reading Only for Us.  I couldn’t help but want Grayson and Emma together.  You could feel their love for each other.  The struggles that we see them experiencing as they become a family feel real.  Only for Us was all about the feels.  With the cliffhanger that Ms. Harber delivers, I can’t wait to read the final installment of the Only series.

Adrian R Hale’s debut, A Taste of Bliss, was a great introduction to a new author.  I’m looking forward to the next book…and the next.

In A Taste of Bliss, we get Bliss and Talen’s story.  I really liked Bliss.  I loved seeing her growth, she’s independent and branching out of the comfortable.  Matching her up with Talen…HOT!  Talen is a mystery and his past slowly unveils, perfectly.

Bravo, Ms. Hale!  A Taste of Bliss is a wonderful debut!  I’m looking forward to your next story, can’t wait for Drift Heat.

Series Review Tour – RICOCHET by Heather C. Leigh

series review tour - Extraction point

richochet extraction point

abouthebook

Rick “Ricochet” Brennan served eight years as an elite Marine special ops Force Recon soldier. After an injury, and the terrible memories from that night, he retires and goes to work for his former Command Officer, Howard “Mack” McEvoy, at his training center in Atlanta.

Sanctum MMA appears on the surface to be a normal gym, training elite fighters to be the best. Except each trainer, hand-picked by Mack, possesses a special background that allows Mack to run one of the best-kept secrets in the country.

When twenty-three year old Quinn Wallace finally escapes her abusive husband, she turns to her father’s old Marine Corps buddy, Mack, for help. Broken and skittish, Quinn finds herself surrounded by large, intimidating men— men who could easily overpower her. She avoids them the best she can, but when Rick turns out to be more than just a rough fighter with bruised knuckles, she finds herself wondering if she can allow herself to trust again.

“Hey,” he said calmly. “Why aren’t you resting?” Rick put his hands on her shoulders, gently massaging her arms.

Quinn’s eyes grew large and went to his gloved hands.

Fuck, she hates fighting. Now I know why she looks freaked out.

Rick yanked his hands away and took a step back. “I didn’t mean for you to see me fight, Quinn. I’m sorry.”

To his surprise, Quinn stepped forward, closing the distance Rick had put between them. He watched as she hesitantly lifted her arms, placing her hands on his sweat-slicked chest. Her eyes met his and his breath left in a sharp huff. The fear he had expected to see wasn’t there. No… Quinn’s eyes were dark and glistening with lust.

“I didn’t know that watching you fight would be so comforting. It makes me feel safe, and… turned on,” she murmured. Rick shivered as her hands ran down his torso, moving over each defined muscle until they were resting on either side of his waist.

“Turned on?” Rick swallowed, barely able to speak with Quinn touching him like that. She was only just about healed from the attack. He figured it would be months, if not longer before she’d be interested in pursuing anything physical.

“Yes, turned on.” Quinn’s fingers dug into Rick’s waist, her thumbs making small circles on the ‘v’ shaped ridges of his lower abs. Scorching waves of pleasure rippled down his spine, instantly making his cock come to life.

“Jesus,” he muttered softly. Using every last bit of willpower he had, Rick captured Quinn’s wrists, removing her hands from his body. “Not here, doll.” He glanced around, but none of the other fighters were looking their way. Still, he’d kill them if they saw the lust in Quinn’s eyes. That was for him, and him alone.

Quinn pouted, crossing her arms and glaring like a kid denied her favorite candy.

He couldn’t help himself. The sight of this tiny thing trying to look intimidating was funny. Rick laughed. “You’re too much, doll.” The corner of her mouth twitched up—it was just a hint of a smile, but it made Rick’s day. Quinn hadn’t smiled once since his team rescued her. Seeing some of her personality coming back flooded him with emotion.

Ricochet was a great introduction to Sanctum MMA.  Who wouldn’t love hot fighters…and if you toss in hot military guys…Sanctum MMA might have you covered.

Locked & Loaded is part 1 in the Ricochet serial and introduces us to Rick and Quinn.  I really liked how the story started, I was immediately hooked on Rick and couldn’t wait to see how his relationship with Quinn would develop.

This first installment was a quick read with an even quicker pace.  I couldn’t believe when I reached the end and that cliffhanger.

Friendly Fire is part 2 and picks up right where Locked & Loaded left off.  Quinn has decided that she needs to tie up her past before moving into her future.  Both Quinn and Rick’s pasts color how they act and react towards each other.

With the second installment, the fast pace read continued.  I enjoyed seeing the development of Rick and Quinn’s relationship.  And then the cliffhanger.

Extraction Point is the third and final installment in the Ricochet serial.  After reading the first and second parts of Rick and Quinn’s story, I couldn’t wait to see how it all ended.  I liked that we see Rick and Quinn get their HEA.  While the fast pace of the story kept me turning the pages, I felt like character development may have benefited with a little more interaction with supporting characters.  I would love to see future stories with the other guys of Sanctum MMA.

excerpt

“Clothes off and prepare to be searched.” His voice is warm, lush, and filled with sensual promise. But I am oh so aware that, dominant as he is, he’s mindful of my issue with being undressed. A warm, fluttery feeling spreads from my belly, beating back the memories.

“Help me.”

And he does. His hands over my hands, we slide my shirt and bra up and over my head, his fingers tangling with mine, caressing my body as I am bared for his pleasure. When we get to my shoulders, I raise my arms and Ray takes over. Slow and sensual, his fingers glide over my skin, filling me with the sensation of his touch. When he reaches my hands, he yanks the clothing over my head and tosses it to the floor with a victory growl.

“Back in position.” He smooths his hands down my arms and places my palms against the cool metal surface of the shop wall. And then he is everywhere, his hands roaming over my body, setting fire to my skin. When he has thoroughly touched and kissed every inch of my exposed skin, he tugs out my ponytail holder. My hair fans out across my back in a silken wave.

“Fuck. I love your hair.” He strokes his fingers through the strands. “Don’t put it up when you’re with me.”

“Guess that means I won’t be with you when I’m exercising or doing ink.” With a grin, I look back over my shoulder, but my smile fades at the intensity of his stare.

“You know what I do to girls who give me attitude?” He kicks my legs apart, then smooths his hand over my ass.

Desire, dark and delicious, curls through my body. “What do you do?”

His hand tightens, fingers digging into my flesh. “I spank them.”

I make a soft sound, deep in my throat. Morbid fascination, dan- gerous desire—everything I’ve imagined but never thought could be real, he offers with a brush of his fingertips. “I’ve never been spanked,” I whisper. “But I think I might like it.”

His deep, satisfied rumble pulses between my legs. “You’re gonna kill me, sayin’ things like that.” He circles my waist with his hands, his fingers lingering on the waistband of my jeans, skimming along the inside, his touch an erotic tickle that makes me writhe against him.

“Don’t move.”

“Then don’t do things that make me want to push you to the ground and tear off your clothes.”

He chuckles, amused. “We’ll get to that later. Right now, you’re taking off your jeans and I’m gonna help you, like last time.”

With a vicious tug, he reaches around and opens the zipper, then positions my hands on my hips and covers them with his palms, guiding me as I push down my jeans. Although he is working around my trigger, he is still totally in control, and I tremble, overwhelmed with the knowledge that for the first time, I can have what I want without the past getting in the way.

He crouches beside me, offering his shoulder as I toe off my shoes and kick my jeans away. Then he licks his lips and barks, “Back to the wall.”

My mouth waters at his tone—low, commanding, authoritative. Intensely erotic. He is so unlike any man I have ever been with. I turn without thinking, curiosity overriding reticence and my fear of losing control.

Crouched in front of me, Ray glides his hands up my legs, his fingers drawing lazy circles over the sensitive skin of my inner thighs, turning my thoughts to the throbbing between my legs. Unable to resist, I run my hands through the soft fuzz on his head.

He looks up, his eyes hooded with desire, then stands, dwarfing me with his massive body. With one hand pressed against the wall beside me, he glides a finger along the edge of my silky red panties, his lips curling into a satisfied smile when I whimper.

“You like red panties?”

“I like what’s hidden by red panties.” His naughty finger glides over my mound, brushing over the thin slip of fabric covering my aching clit. My breath catches in my throat, and I arch my back and moan.

“You want more?” His voice rumbles in my ear as he slides his hand down to cup my sex.

“Yes.”

He wraps one arm around my waist, pulling my body against him. Then he kicks my legs apart.

“Open for me.”

excerpt

Ray grabs my wrists and pins them to the mat over my head, his body angled over me. My breath catches in my throat, and I steel myself for the memories, the black rush, the heart-pounding fear, but it doesn’t come. Instead, a red haze settles over my vision, and I press my lips together and buck my hips, throwing him slightly forward.

Bad plan. Now his groin is only inches away from my face. He’s still wearing his jeans, which means that bulge isn’t a cup.

“Ray…”
His face softens. “I hurt you.”
“Yes, you hurt me. Keeping secrets hurts me. It makes me feel like you don’t respect me. And it makes me feel like I can’t trust you. So maybe you could return to your proper seat now. Tray table up.”

He shifts down, settling his weight over my hips, but he doesn’t release my hands. “I hurt you. Means you care.”

I swallow hard and meet his gaze. “You hurting me means I was being stupid. Things were going where I didn’t want them to go. Now I’ve had a wake-up call. You have secrets you can’t share. You need to protect your secrets. I need to be with someone I can trust, and I need to stand on my own two feet. It’s just not going to work between us.”

His gaze darkens, searing me to the core. “You want to be done? Or are you scared and trying to push me away?”

The air shifts between us, electrifying, tightening my nipples and heating my blood. I am hyperaware of his thighs tucked against my hips, carrying most of his weight as he sits astride me in a dominant MMA position. My wrists, hot under his palms, press against the cool mat, restrained in a way I could never have imagined allowing them to be restrained. My chest rises and falls twice for every one of Ray’s breaths, and my core tightens. The innuendo isn’t lost on me. God, yes. I want to be done in the carnal sense of the word. But only by Ray. And I don’t really want to let him go.

“I don’t want to lose you.”

Ray’s hands tighten on my wrists, and he leans down and brushes a kiss over my lips. “I don’t want to lose you either, but I live in a dangerous world. I’ve got stuff in my life that would make your head spin. I need to protect you from that, and I’ll do what it takes to keep you safe, even if it means you hate me for it, because for the first time in my life, I want something more than doing my duty. I want a life and I want you in it. I’ve got one bad guy to catch and then I’m free. And after I’m done and after what went down this evening, you’ll never have to worry about being safe again.”

Finally, he releases my hands but I don’t move. Heat sweeps through my belly. I feel both vulnerable and curiously safe lying beneath him. My gaze shifts from his intense gaze to his sensual lips, and my breasts swell, remembering the touch of his hands, the gentle press of his lips. He wants me. Not just today, but tomorrow and the tomorrow after that.

“You make it sound like I don’t have a choice about being with you.”

“You don’t.” He leans down and kisses me with a savage fierceness that takes my breath away.

excerpt

The burners are already asleep, which leaves Shane and me alone for all intents and purposes. He digs into his backpack and produces the pink post-it I left him. I guess he’s heard about the Princess.

“You left me this?” he asks.

I nod, feeling heat wash my cheeks.

“When did you hear me play?” He studies me through those thick, curling lashes, giving me the I-see-you look. I could curl up in that expression like it’s an afghan.

“Just before last period.”

“Explain to me why this was worth a tardy.”

So he knows, then. It sounds stupid when I try to articulate it; my reasons come out in a whispered jumble, about making somebody’s day better when things are total crap. I talk about silver linings and being the queen of bright and shiny things. He’s listening, but I sound crazy. I know I do. It’s pointless, possibly even pretentious, to think I could make a difference. I end my rambling recitation by saying as much.

To my surprise, he shakes his head. “No way. I’m sure there are people who are glad that you pay attention to them, who need to know someone gives a shit.”

“But not you?” I ask softly.

“This is a cake walk compared to what I’m used to dealing with on a daily basis.” The moment the words are out, he looks like he wishes he hadn’t spoken them, but it’s too late.

I’m left wondering what’s so bad at home that being beaten up is a welcome change. His tropical eyes dare me to ask, dare me to pry into his business, but I’m not brave enough. If he wanted me to know more, he’d tell me, right? Otherwise it’s just me being nosy.

“My Aunt Gabby is pretty great,” I say. “But… it was bad before.”

Shane makes a scoffing noise. “What do you know about ‘bad’?”

He sees the image I’ve cultivated for the last three years. I went to therapy; I learned how to be good, how not to be angry. But every day, there’s an underground river inside me, and I’m trying not to drown in it, every second of the day. This smile hides so much. It hides everything.

Part of me wants to tell him the truth. But I don’t. Instead I duck my head, dodging his slow realization that my life hasn’t been sunshine and rainbows. I rarely let anyone see Shadow Sage; I’ve done my best to bury her. Now she’s just a thin hand reaching up from a fresh grave.

“Hey.” He touches my forearm briefly, and in those scant seconds, I register the heat of his fingertips, the calluses on his skin. “I didn’t mean to be a dick. I don’t hold the trademark on crappy deals.”

He’s looking at me that way again, and the pretext of dispassion falls away. We’re twin counterweights on a scale, hanging in a moment of perfect balance. I hardly dare to breathe for fear the air will shift, and the hunger I’m seeing in him will disappear. Though he’s pretending he doesn’t care, he wants somebody to notice him. I recognize it so fast because I’ve been there. Hey world, please acknowledge my existence. Please care. On my end, nobody has ever seen me before. Not like this.

Until this moment, I didn’t realize I was walking around all this time with a Shane-shaped hole inside of me.

The Queen of Bright and Shiny Things is all about the characters.  This was a revisit of all things high school with characters living real issues.  I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book in Sage’s POV.  Initially she comes across very light, sweet and grounded.  As I read, I saw that was just the surface.  There is exceptional depth to Ann Aguirre’s characters and under the carefree portrayal, Sage has a dark history.  The way this story unfolds keeps the pages turning.  The pacing is smooth and I love how we learn about the different characters.

I’m never going to think of Post-it notes quite the same.  And wouldn’t it be great if every school had someone leaving them for fellow students to read.
